Hugo Laurence, The Reborn

This character design was made as an optional part of my study, a small course in character design.
Hugo Laurence was a man of faith. He did what he was asked, which would sometimes lead to the pain and suffering of others. In death, he found himself not at the pearly gates, but at the depths of Hell. He endured day after day, yet he was left with burning questions.
Eventually he was gifted a second chance at life, as someone brought him back. Now, he roams the world, seeking answers and maybe redeeming himself in the process.

Silhouette
The first stage of Hugo was a silhouette. This was one of the first times I made silhouettes for a character design.
After the first few pages, I began adding small details with white.
I decided I liked the idea of him walking on for legs, so I experimented with that more. I wanted to see if I could make him a bit more twisted, but eventually refrained from this.
This would lead into my last few silhouettes. Finally, I checked digitally what I thought of him, and I decided I would go to the next stage.
Lineart
For my lineart, I was inspired by Thiago Lehman. I started out having the same line thickness, but thanks to some feedback, I started implementing variety. It made the drawing feel more interesting.
Color Keys
After that came the coloring, which was also very new to me. Luckily, my peer taught me a quick way to test colors, and so I could quite quickly find a few colors I liked.
It was colored hastily, to not spend too much time on a sketch. This was the one I went with. This would be polished into my final artwork.
Reflection
During the process of making Hugo, most time was spend on the silhouette, as I was very new in that field. Due to this quick course, I have gained a lot of insight on parts of character design I had neglected before, mainly the silhouette and color keys. Because of that, this project was time well spend, as I feel more confident in my abilities now.
